ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team jumped out to an early lead Friday afternoon but were unable to hold off visiting LaSalle in the series-opener, dropping a 16-5 contest at Greenwood Field.
The Bulldogs (5-7) scored a run in each of the first two innings before seeing LaSalle (5-6) score in each of the final seven frames to pull away.
Asheville finished with just six hits after tallying three hits in the first two frames, led by Hunter Bryant's two-hit, two-RBI afternoon that included a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth.
LaSalle saw a pair of three-run innings in both the fifth and eighth frames and also added a five-run ninth inning to their final line score while collecting 20 hits as a team.
Bulldog starter Corey Randall fell to 1-2 on the year after allowing six runs on nine hits while walking four batters in his 4 2/3 innings of work.
Asheville used a Bryant RBI single in the bottom of the first inning to bring home Lucas Owens to get the scoring going before Pete Guy's solo homer in the second frame gave the hosts a 2-0 lead.
After seeing the visitors score three runs over the next two innings, the Bulldogs tied the game momentarily in the bottom of the fourth on Guy's RBI groundout before LaSalle pulled ahead for good with a three-run fifth inning.
The teams continue their three-game series Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. first pitch.
