Bulldogs Fall 7-5 to NJIT in Weekend Finale

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball wrapped up a four-game weekend round-robin series with a 7-5 loss to NJIT on Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
Asheville falls to 4-6 on the year, while NJIT improves to 3-3 overall.
Johnny Malatesta (1-0) earned the win for the Highlanders throwing 5.0 innings. Malatesta kept the Asheville bats off balance, allowing just three hits and one run, while striking out three. Tyler Kapp came on the seventh inning to earn his third save of the year. Kapp surrendered two hits and two runs in three innings of work.
Joe Zayatz (0-3) was credited with the loss on the mound for the Blue & White. Zayatz threw 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs.
Trailing by five runs entering the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs rallied to score three runs and cut the NJIT lead to 5-3. Tommy Houmard and Lucas Owens led off the inning back-to-back singles. Houmard scored two batters later on Kyle Towles single to left field. With two outs in the inning, Pete Guy sent one back up the middle to score Owens and Towles.
The Highlanders tacked on two runs in the eighth and took a 7-3 lead into the Asheville half of the ninth inning. Joe Tietjen led the inning off with a walk and Pete Guy singled through the left side. After stealing third base, Tietjen scored on Justin Woods' groundout to second. Two batters later, Kyle Carruthers' single drove in pinch runner Sean Grebeck. The rally was halted when Houmard flew out deep to right field to end the game.
Pete Guy led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Owens added two hits and a run scored, while Carruthers, Towles and Woods each tallied an RBI.
Asheville returns to action on Wednesday when East Tennessee State travels to Greenwood Field for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
