ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Andrew Rowsey became the first player in school history to record 1,000 career points as a sophomore as UNC Asheville downed defending Big South Conference champion Coastal Carolina, 75-65 before a frenzied crowd of 2,263 Thursday night at Kimmel Arena.
Rowsey entered the game needing 17 points to reach 1,000 and he scored 17. His jumper late in the game gave him 1,000 and helped seal the Bulldogs win. The sophomore guard is just the second player in Big South history to reach 1,000 points by his sophomore year. John Brown of High Point reached that plateau last year.
Asheville moved into a five-way tie for first place in the Big South Conference with Coastal Carolina, High Point, Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb.
Joining Rowsey in double figures was David Robertson with 14 points; Kevin Vannatta added 13 and Will Weeks finished with 10 points.
Coastal Carolina (14-5, 5-2 BSC) was led by Warren Gillis with 14 points. Elijah Wilson finished with 13 points.
Asheville led from start to finish in a game televised by ESPNU. The Bulldogs defense limited the Chanticleers to just 39 percent (21-of-53) shooting from the field. Asheville shot 51 percent (25-of-49) from the field and went 46 percent (5-of-11) from beyond the arc in the first half.
Robertson tallied 12 points and Weeks added eight in the first half as the Bulldogs roared to a 40-26 halftime lead. CCU shot just 32 percent (10-of-31) from the field.
In the second half, Asheville built the lead to 66-46 on two free throws from Rowsey at the 7:23 mark.
Coastal Carolina rallied by scoring the next 11 points to close to 66-57 on a Wilson trey at the 5:18 mark. But the Bulldogs were able to hold on and Rowsey's jumper at the 1:53 mark gave him his 1,000th point and pushed the lead to 75-61.
Asheville out-rebounded CCU, 36-25 and outscored the visitors, 14-3 on fast-break points.
UNC Asheville plays next at High Point Saturday night at 7 p.m.
