CSU Edges Women's Soccer, 3-2

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gina Thomas scored in the 83rd minute to give Charleston Southern a hard-fought 3-2 victory over UNC Asheville in Big South Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at CSU Field.
The Bulldogs (6-5-1, 1-2-1) got goals from Caroline Houser and Paige Trent in the match. Trent had an assist on Asheville's first goal. Amanda Dailor added an assist for the Blue & White.
Saturday's match was tied 2-2 at halftime and appeared to be going to overtime when Thomas struck. The senior midfielder stole a Bulldog pass and scored her second goal of the season to put the home team in front, 3-2 at 83:21.
Asheville opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Caroline Houser scored her fourth goal of the season off a feed from Trent. Houser headed the cross from Trent into the back of the net for a 1-0 Bulldog lead at 26:08
CSU (5-6-1, 1-2-1 BSC) scored two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead. Anna Sellers scored an unassisted goal at 33:50 to knot the match at 1-1.
Less than four minutes later, Jordan Newman scored at 37:25 to put the Lady Bucs in front, 2-1.
Asheville responded at 41:58 when Trent scored her fourth goal of the season on a pass from Dailor to tie the match at 2-2.
Each team had 19 shots each. Asheville held a 14-9 advantage in shots during the first half, while CSU had a 10-5 edge in the second half.
Trent led the Bulldogs with seven shots. Goalkeeper Heather Muller made four saves for the Blue & White.
Asheville returns home this week for a two-game homestand at Greenwood Field. The Bulldogs entertain Winthrop Wednesday at 5 p.m., followed by a match with Radford Saturday at 2 p.m.
