LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team dropped its first conference match of the season, 8-0, to defending Big South Champions Liberty University on Wednesday afternoon.

 

Asheville drops to 6-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in Big South play, while Liberty improves to 7-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference matches.

 

The Flames took the lead in the 20th minute when Rebeccah Smith found the back of the net after collecting a cross just inside the 18-yard box.  Liberty added two more to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.

 

Caroline Houser had the first opportunity of the match for the Bulldogs, but her 8th minute effort was hauled in by Holly Van Noord.  Two minutes later, Naber forced Van Noord into her second of three first half saves.

 

Liberty extended the lead just four minutes into the second half.  Crystal Elmers collected a pass from Brittany Aanderud a fired her shot past Keller Dixon who subbed in for Heather Muller at the beginning of the second half.  Jamie Bouffard and Alanna Dunkle each added a pair of goals for the Flames to cap the scoring on the afternoon.

 

Liberty outshot Asheville 34-11 for the match. Paige Trent led the Bulldogs with four shots, while Amanda Dailor and Abby Holt each added two shots.  Heather Muller and Keller Dixon each stopped five shots, while splitting the minutes in the net.

 

Asheville returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Charleston to take on the Buccaneers of Charleston Southern at 1:00 p.m.
