ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Andrew Deeds hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning as Morehead State held on for a 4-3 victory over homestanding UNC Asheville Friday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
The Bulldogs (7-8) loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs. Todd Joyner sent a fly ball to deep center field that just fell short of going out as the Eagles held on for the non-conference victory.
Asheville was led at the plate by Billy Creighton and Kyle Weston with two hits each. Creighton had an RBI-double in the first inning.
The Bulldogs led 2-1 in the sixth inning behind the pitching of starter Ryan Dull (2-2). With one out, Chase Greenwell singled, followed by single from Luke Bainer. Deeds then hit his second home run of the year over the left-field wall for a 4-2 Morehead State lead.
Asheville battled back to get within 4-3 in the seventh. Weston led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. He then scored when Jordan Lurie reached on an error at second base. The Bulldogs got the tying run to third but reliever Morgan Cirbo struck out Grant Gajdosz to end the threat.
The home team got the tying run to second in the eighth as Hunter Bryant reached on an infield single. Pinch-runner Thomas Bess stole second but closer Matt Duncan was able to get the final out of the inning.
In the ninth, Duncan pitched around an error and two walks to load the bases but was able to get a strikeout and a fly-out for his third save of the season.
Dull was the hard-luck loser for the Bulldogs. He pitched seven innings, scattering eight hits, striking out nine and walking just one.
Aaron Goe (2-1) earned the win for Morehead State. He pitched six innings, allowing 10 hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Asheville open the scoring in the first on Creighton's RBI-double as the Bulldogs led 1-0.
Morehead State came right back in the top of the second. Deeds singled to left and he came home on Kane Sweeney's RBI-triple to knot the game at 1-1. Dull got the next three outs to keep the game tied at 1-1.
The Bulldogs moved ahead in the fourth with two-out lightning. With two outs, Cody Buch doubled to left field. Weston then singled to center, scoring Buch for a 2-1 Asheville lead.
The teams will play the second of their three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m.
