RADFORD, Va. - With runners at first and third in the bottom of the 14th inning, Radford's Josh Gardiner singled to leftfield to give the Highlanders a 2-1 victory over UNC Asheville on Sunday evening in Big South Conference play.
With the loss Asheville drops to 12-13 overall, and 3-3 in the Big South. Reliever Ethan Steible (0-1) was credited with the loss despite allowing only one run on two hits in three innings of work. Starter Dean Roland pitched 10 shutout innings for the Bulldogs, allowing six hits and striking out seven batters in the no-decision.
The Highlanders improve to 14-10 on the year and 3-0 in conference play. Radford also sweeps the Bulldogs for the fourth consecutive year, having now won 12 in a row against the Blue & White. Abram Williams (1-1) picked up the win in relief, giving up only one hit in three innings.
The two teams took a scoreless tie into the 11th when the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead on an error by Radford. The Highlanders then tied the game in the bottom of the frame, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly by Blake Sipe.
After neither team was able to plate runners in the 12th and 13th innings, Gardiner was able to come up with the game winning hit with runners at the corners to give the Highlanders the win.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on the Terriers of Wofford in a midweek game.
