RADFORD, Va. – Radford University exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the third, then six more in the fifth en route to a 16-1 victory over Big South Conference foe UNC Asheville on Friday evening at the RU Baseball Stadium, as the Highlanders handed the Bulldogs their most lopsided loss this season.
The Bulldogs could not get their offense on track all evening, with only four players reaching base on the night.
The loss for the Blue & White was also the first Big South loss of the season for the Bulldogs, who fall to 12-11 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Radford improves to 12-10 on the year with a 1-0 record in the league.
Centerfielder Thomas Bess had two of Asheville's three hits on the night, going 2-for-2 with a run scored. Ryan Dull (2-3) got the start on the mound and was credited with the loss, allowing nine runs (six earned) on seven hits in two and two-thirds innings.
Radford's Brett Mollenhauer was 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs batted in and three runs scored, with teammates Jeff Kemp and Matt Hillsinger each going 2-for-3 with three RBI apiece. Eddie Butler improved to 2-1 on the year pitching six strong innings for the Highlanders, allowing one run on three hits.
Due to inclement weather expected in the Radford area on Sunday, the two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon.
