CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - Winthrop University's women's tennis team has been voted first in the Big South Conference's annual preseason poll by the League's head coaches, it was announced today by the Conference office. The Lady Eagles picked up seven first-place bids and 79 points in earning its seventh consecutive No. 1 ranking.
Coastal Carolina claimed one first-place vote and 63 points to place second in the poll, one point ahead of Charleston Southern's 62 points. In fourth with one top vote and 54 points was Liberty, followed by Campbell at 46 points. Gardner-Webb landed in the No. 6 slot with 34 points, while UNC Asheville's 31 points was good for seventh. Rounding out the poll was Radford with 24 points and Presbyterian College, which earned 12 points.
The Bulldogs struggled through an injury-filled season last year and finished with a 6-16 overall record. Asheville is a much deeper this season and should be much improved in 2012.
"I really like the new players we have in the program. We have some much-needed depth which should make us a better team this year," declared head coach Lise Gregory. "We had a good fall and hopefully that success will translate into the spring season."
Asheville opens the 2012 spring season at home against Davidson on Jan. 28. The Bulldogs play their home matches at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
The Big South Women's Tennis Conference Championship is slated for Thursday-Saturday, April 19-21, and will be hosted by UNC Asheville.
