Both Tennis Teams Honored by ITA for Academics

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's tennis teams were honored on Thursday for their work in the classroom by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Each team was designated as an ITA All-Academic team for the 2010-11 academic year.

For a team to make be honored by the ITA, it must have a team GPA of 3.20 or above. For the women's squad, it marks the fourth straight year it has been awarded the ITA honors.

In addition, five Bulldog student-athletes were named as ITA Scholar-Athlete honorees. To receive this honor, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.50 GPA or above for the 2010-11 year.

On the women's side, Asheville had three players recognized. They were Devon Cavanaugh, Nicole Schon and Zoe Hamel.

The men's side had two players honored. They were Alex Appelt and Thomas Rees.

"I'm extremely proud of both of our teams for what they accomplished in the classroom last year and to receive this honor," stated Asheville head coach Lise Gregory.
