High Point Rallies For 8-7 Win Over Bulldogs

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After rallying for five runs to take a 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth the UNC Asheville baseball team gave up three runs in the top of the ninth to Big South Conference foe High Point as the Bulldogs fell 8-7 to the Panthers at Greenwood Field on Friday.
In the first contest of a three-game league series the Panthers tallied eight runs on 14 hits to improve to 18-18 on the year, with a 5-8 mark in conference. Pitcher Corey Swickle (3-3) picked up the win in relief throwing one and two-thirds innings and striking out four.
Asheville drops to 13-21 overall with a 5-8 record in the Big South. Dillon Tabar (3-2) was credited with the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in the top of the ninth.
Robert McIntosh was a force at the plate for the Blue & White on the day, going 4-for-5 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Jordan Lurie also continued his impressive play, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Leadoff batter Sal Pezzino led the Panthers offensively collecting two RBI and two runs scored on 2-for-4 batting. Steve Antolik went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored to help lead the Panthers to victory.
The Bulldogs struggled defensively on the day, committing four errors as a team. High Point plated a runner in each inning Asheville recorded an error.
The Bulldogs struck first going up 2-0 in the third, scoring a run on a Beau Zinman single and a Patrick Koontz fielder's choice. High Point responded in the fourth when Pezzino homered to right and then tied the game on a Ryan Retz single up the middle.
HPU would score two in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead heading into the eighth.
The Bulldogs would rally for five runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a McIntosh double down the rightfield line that plated to runners for Asheville. Heading into the ninth the Bulldogs led 7-5.
In the top of the ninth the Panthers loaded the bases with no outs for Steve Antolik, who singled through the left side to plate one run. Scott Glover hit an infield single that plated one more and then Murray White IV hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the Panthers the lead.

The two teams are set to meet again on Saturday at Greenwood, with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. However due to inclement weather expected in the Asheville area game time is subject to change.
