Bulldogs Snap Losing Skid With 6-2 Win Over Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team snapped a 10-game losing skid on Wednesday evening with a 6-2 victory over region-rival Western Carolina at Hennon Stadium on the campus of the Catamounts in non-conference play.
Pitcher Grier Harrington (2-2) picked up the victory in relief for the Bulldogs who improve to 5-10 on the year with the win. Harrington went two and two-thirds innings allowing only one hit over nine batters. Second baseman Jordan Lurie went 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored while Eli Miller and Beau Zinman each drove in two RBI.
WCU falls to 8-7 on the season with pitcher Kyle Stewart picking up the loss. Stewart pitched three complete innings allowing four runs (all earned) on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Rightfielder Julian Ridings went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI to lead the Catamounts offensively.
Asheville scored the game's first run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Miller. WCU took the lead in the fifth inning with a pair of runs, scoring on a single and a bunt to go up 2-1. Asheville exploded for four runs in the top of the sixth highlighted by a Zinman two-RBI double to left.
The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a Miller single to left to go up 6-2. The Catamounts went down in order in the bottom of the frame as the Blue & White picked up their fifth win of the season.
Asheville will begin conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Big South foe Gardner-Webb beginning on Friday.
