09.12.2010 | Women's Soccer
The Bulldogs (0-5-0) fought back from an early 1-0 deficit as they got goals from Chole McCleary-Small and Leilani Halkiotis to grab a 2-1 lead early in the second half.
But the Terriers (4-2-0) got a goal each from Alex Kachulis and Megan Wellborn in a four-minute span to pick up the victory.
Asheville dominated play in the final 10 minutes but just could not get the equalizer.
Wofford opened the scoring 58 seconds into the match. Emily Bougas stole a Bulldog pass and scored to put the Terriers in front, 1-0.
The home team settled down and kept Wofford at bay and picked up more confidence as the half continued. In the 40th minute, Halkiotis had a free kick from 25 yards out. Her kick went perfectly into the box and McCleary-Smith was there to tap the ball into the goal to knot the match at 1-1. It was the sophomore forward's first goal of the year and it came at 40:28
The momentum continued for Asheville in the second half. Halkiotis scored her second goal of the year on a blast from 10 yards out for a 2-1 Bulldog lead. McCleary-Small and Hannah Jeske earned assists on the play as the goal came at 53:15.
Asheville had several chances to build on the lead, but Wofford goalkeeper Erika Christensen made some nice saves to keep it a 2-1 game.
The Terriers tied the game at 71:45 when Jewel Kawamoto's corner kick was headed in by Kachulis for a 2-2 match.
Less than four minutes later, Kawamoto sent another corner kick into the box. Maggie O'Brien took a shot that was saved by Asheville goalkeeper Megan Dent. The rebound went right to Wellborn who scored for a 3-2 Terrier lead at 75:00.
McCleary-Small and Halkiotis did a good job for Asheville on offense as the duo combined for two goals, two assists and seven shots. Dent made seven saves for the Bulldogs.
Asheville plays again on Wednesday night against Southern Conference for Furman at 7 p.m.
