Women's Soccer Wins Scrimmage with App State, 1-0

Women's Soccer Falls to Furman, 4-1

GREENVILLE, S.C. – UNC Asheville stunned Southern Conference power Furman with an early goal, but the Paladins were able to recover and defeat the Bulldogs 4-1 in women's soccer action Wednesday night at Paladin Soccer Stadium.

Asheville (0-6-0) battled Furman all night and fired a season-high 21 shots on goal. Paladin goalie Jessica Smith was forced to make 10 saves, including six in the second half.

The Bulldogs jumped in front in the third minute of the game when Chole McCleary-Small fed Katy Beeler who scored from six yards out on a blast to give Asheville a 1-0 lead at the 3:54 mark. It was Beeler's first goal of the year.

But the lead didn't last long as Furman tied the match 19 seconds later when Martha Hall scored on a volley at the 4:15 mark to knot the match at 1-1.

Rachel Shelnutt scored two goals later in the first half to give the Paladins a 3-1 lead.

Hall scored her second goal of the night at 53:00 to push the Furman margin to 4-1.l

The Bulldogs peppered the Paladin goal with 13 shots in the second half but just could not get the ball into the back of the net again. McCleary-Small had five shots in the match, while Dana Sroka had four shots.

Asheville begins a four-game homestand on Sunday afternoon when the Bulldogs face Francis Marion at Greenwood Field starting at 2 p.m. The match will be video-streamed and can be seen at www.uncabulldogs.com.
