Miller Goes For 15 Kills, But Austin Peay Takes Match

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Outside hitter Cindi Miller continued her stellar junior campaign by posting a match high 15 kills against Austin Peay on Saturday morning at the 2010 Buccaneer Classic hosted by ETSU, but the UNC Asheville volleyball team could not get the rest of its offense going against the Lady Governors as the Bulldogs dropped a 3-0 decision.

As a team the Bulldogs only posted 34 kills while hitting for a .153 mark in the match. In contrast, four Lady Govs combined for 42 kills with Nikki Doyle going for 13 and Kayla Grantham posting 11. APSU improves to 8-1 on the season while the Bulldogs drop to 4-5.

The first set was the story of the match as the two teams ran out to a 19-19 tie. Asheville took a two-point lead on kills by Rachel Guinane and Miller, forcing a timeout by the Lady Govs. An attack error by Doyle gave the Bulldogs set-point at 24-22, but Austin Peay would rally for four unanswered points to take the frame 26-24.

“I thought we played pretty well throughout the match, we just didn't close out that first set,” said Bulldogs head coach Julie Torbett. “We did some things well, we just didn't finish. We just need to get everybody playing well together to beat teams like Austin Peay.”

In the second set Asheville slowly built a three-point lead, taking a 14-11 advantage midway through. However, the Lady Govs would go on a 14-6 run to close out the set with a 25-20 win.

The third set saw the two teams once again trade points until the set was tied at 10 points apiece. The Lady Govs took the lead shortly thereafter, going on a 12-5 run to put the match out of reach at 22-15. The Bulldogs rally fell short and Austin Peay would take the set 25-19.

Guinane recorded 22 assists from the setter position and Rachel Wells posted 14 digs on defense. Miller (12), Kelsey Benorden (11) and Alex Stewart (11) also posted double-digit digs for the Asheville defense.

In directing the Lady Govs' offense Sarah Alisaleh tallied 43 assists, with libero Paige Economos adding a match-high 17 digs on defense.

The Bulldogs will close out the tournament Saturday evening when they take on host ETSU. Asheville will look to salvage the weekend beginning at 7 p.m. against the Buccaneers.
