BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State exploded for 18 runs on 17 hits as the Mountaineers defeated visiting UNC Asheville 18-5 in non-conference action Tuesday night. The game was hampered by rain throughout the evening and was called after the Bulldogs had batted in the seventh inning

Asheville (11-26) managed 10 hits in the game but simply couldn't keep the Mountaineers (30-8-1) away from big innings. The home team scored eight runs in the second inning and four more in two other innings.

The Bulldogs were led by Mike Vaughn's three hits, all doubles. He went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Catlin Carter went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Asheville jumped in front 1-0 in the second inning when Vaughn led off with a double. He scored one out later on Beau Zinman's RBI-single.

ASU took the lead for good in the second inning with eight runs to go in front, 8-1.

The Bulldogs tried to rally in the third with two runs. Justin Schumer and Carter walked to put runners on first and second. Vaughn delivered his second double of the game, scoring two runs to cut the lead to 8-3.

ASU pushed across four more runs in the bottom of the third to pad the lead to 12-3.

Vaughn added a RBI-double in the sixth. Schumer had an RBI-double in the seventh inning.

The Bulldogs play at Furman Wednesday afternoon starting at 4 p.m. before going to defending Big South Conference champion and #4-ranked Coastal Carolina for a three-game series starting on Friday.
