Winthrop (17-17, 5-6 BSC) also got great starting pitching from Matteo D'Angelo (4-3) who pitched eight innings, scattering 10 hits and allowed just one run. He struck out four and walked one.
The Bulldogs (11-20, 5-9 BSC) were led at the plate by Danny Baatz and Jonny Eaker with three hits each. Baatz went 3-for-5 with a two-run double. Eaker went 3-for-4 with a double. Justin Schumer also had two hits for Asheville.
The Eagles unleashed a 22-hit attack against four Asheville pitchers. Winthrop scored in every inning but the third and eighth innings. Matt Thielepape went 2-for-6 with four RBI and a three-run homer.
Sullivan had three doubles in the game and scored four runs. Tyler Cooke added three hits and two RBI for the Eagles. Patrick Gamblin hit a two-run homer for the visitors.
Winthrop got on top quickly in the first inning. Sullivan opened the game with a double and then scored on a RBI-single from Eddie Rohan.
The Eagles tacked on three more runs in the second on some clutch two-out hitting. Tyler McBride's RBI-single in the first run of the inning for a 2-0 Winthrop advantage. Sullivan followed with a run-scoring single that plated one run with another run scoring on an outfield error for a 4-0 Eagle lead.
Cook's RBI-single scored a run for Winthrop in the fifth to pad the lead to 5-0. Sullivan scored in the sixth on a run-scoring single from Rohan. Thielepape added another RBI on a single.
Sullivan added a two-run double in the seventh. Thielepape slugged a three-run homer in the ninth.
Asheville got on the board in the eighth when Baatz singled and came home on C.A. Clayton's RBI-double. The Bulldogs scored two more runs on Baatz's two-run double in the ninth. The Eagles used three pitchers in the ninth to get the final three outs.
The teams will finish their series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
