ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Adam Gliebe went 4-for-5 from the plate to help lead Winthrop to a 10-8 Big South Conference victory over UNC Asheville at McCormick Field Sunday afternoon.

The win allowed the Eagles (18-17, 6-6 BSC) to complete a three-game sweep over the Bulldogs (11-21, 5-10 BSC). Asheville fought back from a 10-4 deficit to close to 10-8 and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning before Winthrop was able to escape with the win.

The Bulldogs (11-21, 5-10 BSC) were led by Justin Schumer and Robert McIntosh with three hits each. Schumer had two hits and two RBI with a double.

The victory went to Winthrop starter Wade Newman (4-2) who struggled through six innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs with two strikeouts. Eric Ruth pitched the final 2.2 innings to preserve the win, despite giving up three hits and two earned runs.

The Eagles plated four runs in the second inning to lead 4-0. Matt Pierpont doubled in two runs to put Winthrop in front, 2-0. Eddie Rohan and Sean Sullivan added RBI-singles in the frame.

The Bulldogs answered back in the bottom of the second as Vaughn hit a two-run homer to cut the lead to 4-2.

A run-scoring single from Gliebe pushed the lead to 5-2 in the third. Asheville rallied to 5-4 with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Schumer drove in one with a run-scoring double. He scored on Ian Graham's RBI-single.

But the Eagles came right back at the Bulldogs in fourth with four more runs.  Four different Winthrop players, including Giebe drove in a run for the visitors to pad the lead to 9-4.

The Eagles scored one more run in the fifth. Tyler McBride tripled to open the inning. Sullivan drove him on a ground-out for a 10-4 advantage.

The Bulldogs got some strong relief pitching from Grier Harrington and Tyler Coyle to help Asheville within striking distance.

The home team struck for two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to close the lead to 10-8. Schumer drove in one with a run-scoring single in the seventh. McIntosh drove in another run with a single to center but was thrown out at second base for the third out of the inning.

The Bulldogs two runs in eighth came home on a Jacob Edwards' RBI-double and a sacrifice fly from Danny Baatz.

UNC Asheville plays next at home against ETSU Tuesday afternoon starting at 3 p.m. The game will be played at McCormick Field.
