College of Charleston Edges UNC Asheville 12-11 in Baseball Action

Bulldog Baseball Splits on Saturday: Wins 3-2 Over Bryant; Loses 7-6 to Davidson

03.06.2010 | Baseball

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Mike Vaughn hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning, and UNC Asheville received strong starting pitching from Taylor Wohlwend as the Bulldogs downed Bryant College 3-2 in non-conference action at Davidson Saturday afternoon.

In the second game against Davidson, the Wildcats scratched across a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge the Bulldogs, 7-6.

Asheville (4-5) was tied 1-1 with Bryant College and being no-hit by Bryant pitcher Eric Polvani going into the seventh. Beau Zinman led the inning off with a single, followed by a two-run homer by Vaughn to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. It was Vaughn's second home run of the season.

That would be enough runs to win the game. Wohlwend (1-1) went 7.1 innings, allowing eight hits, two runs, one earned. He struck out a career-high 10 hitters.  Red-shirt junior David Ricker got two key outs in the eighth inning as Bryant struck for a run to cut the lead to 3-2. Robert McIntosh was called upon in the ninth to close the game, and he did just that to pick up his first save of the year.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the third inning without a hit. Austin Graham walked and went to third on two groundouts. He scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 Asheville lead.

In the second game, Asheville had 15 hits and rallied from a 5-2 deficit to take a 6-5 lead with four runs in the sixth inning. Davidson picked up a run in the sixth and eighth innings to get the home win.

Asheville was led by Danny Baatz and Vaughn with three hits each. Zinman homered and drove in another with a sacrifice fly.

Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, Asheville sent nine men to the plate to grab the lead. Baatz led the inning off with a solo home run to narrow the lead to 5-3. One out later, McIntosh singled. He went to third on Vaughn's double. With runners on second third, Zinman hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 5-4. Johnny Eaker singled to center field to score McIntosh to knot the game at 5-5. Later in the inning, Jordan Lurie's run-scoring single pushed Eaker across the plate for a 6-5 lead.

Justin Schumer's RBI-single in the first inning gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. After Davidson tied the game at 1-1, Asheville went in front, 2-1 in the second on Zinman's solo homer.

The Bulldogs are back on the road on Monday and Tuesday at Georgia State. Asheville plays the Panthers Monday at 4 p.m. and Tuesday at 2 p.m. The original series was to be played Tuesday and Wednesday but has been moved up a day.
