Bulldogs Rally Past North Carolina Central, 5-4

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Robert McIntosh's two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed UNC Asheville to slip past North Carolina Central, 5-4 in college baseball action at Greenwood Field Wednesday afternoon.
McIntosh (1-0) also got the win as he pitched the top of the ninth for the Bulldogs (5-12). The victory snapped an eight-game Asheville losing streak. The hard-luck Eagles fell to 0-19 on the season.
Justin Schumer led the Bulldogs at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a solo home run. Catlin Carter added two hits for Asheville, while Danny Baatz hit a solo home run in fourth inning.
Akeem Hood had two hits for N.C. Central. Kurt Wilson drove in two runs for the visitors.
Wilson's RBI-single in the top of the ninth gave N.C. Central a 4-3 lead. Tim McAllister led the inning off with a single. He went to third on a sacrifice and fly-out. Wilson faced a 0-2 count but managed to slap a single into left-field give the Eagles the lead.
Asheville quickly rallied in the ninth. Cody Buch led off with a single. He was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Beau Zinman. Jacob Edwards walked to put runners on first and second.
Catlin Carter followed with an infield single to load the bases. His slow roller to second allowed the bases to be loaded.
McIntosh needed just one pitch to drive a ball into right-center field to plate the two runs and give Asheville its first walk-off win of the season.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the first when Blake Murray's two-out single plated Hood for a 1-0 NCCU lead.
Baatz's solo homer tied the game in fourth inning. Schumer's run-scoring single plated Edwards to give Asheville a 2-1 lead in the fifth.
N.C. Central tied the game one inning later. Nate Smith singled and then to third on a sacrifice bunt from Ross Plummer. He scored one out later on a passed ball to knot the game at 2-2.
Central grabbed the lead again in the seventh on a Wilson's sacrifice fly for a 3-2 lead. Schumer tied the game in the eighth with a solo home run. It was the senior's second home run of the year.
Asheville hosts Big South foe Liberty in a three-game series at Greenwood Field, starting Friday at 3 p.m.
