01.14.2010 | Men's Basketball
The Bulldogs (4-12, 2-4 BSC) had six players in double figures in the victory as Asheville rallied from an early 13-point deficit to pick up its third straight win at VMI.
"This was a much-needed victory," commented Bulldog head coach Eddie Biedenbach. "We didn't play well early but then we really got things turned around late in the first half and played some great basketball.
"We've been playing better but it was important to get a victory," added Biedenbach. "We got a nice game from Sean Smith who shot the ball well and got us going in the first half."
Smith went 6-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. The senior guard moved into second place on the school's career list for three-pointers made as he now has 167.
Also in double figures for Asheville was sophomore guard J.P. Primm with 17 points and six assists. John Williams chipped in 16 points, while Chris Stephenson added 15. Matt Dickey contributed 12 points and freshman guard Jaron Lane had 10 points.
The Keydets (5-10, 1-5) were led by Stan Okoye with 21 points.
VMI led 31-19 with seven minutes to go in the first half before the Bulldogs caught fire. Asheville went on a 33-11 run over those seven minutes to storm to a 52-42 halftime lead. Smith's trey at the end of the first half ended the run with an exclamation point.
"We really played great at the end of the first half," said Biedenbach. "I thought our guys were great in every facet of the game."
The Keydets closed to four with five minutes to go but big treys by Smith and Dickey kept the Bulldogs in front.
Asheville plays next at Big South foe Liberty Saturday night at 7 p.m.
