LYNCHBURG, VA. - Matt Dickey scored 22 points to lead UNC Asheville to a 74-70 Big South Conference road win over Liberty Saturday night at the Vines Center.

The win was the second straight for the Bulldogs (5-12, 3-4 BSC) and gave Asheville its first win at the Vines Center in four years. It was also the 109th Big South Conference win for Bulldog head coach Eddie Biedenbach. He is now tied with former Radford coach Ron Bradley for the most league wins in Big South Conference history.

"This is a big win for us to beat a good team on the road like Liberty," commented Bulldog head coach Eddie Biedenbach. "We really did a great job grinding out a victory. I thought we battled hard from start to finish and found a way to get the job done."

John Williams and freshman guard Jaron Lane added 12 points each. Williams grabbed eight rebounds and blocked five shots. Sophomore guard J.P. Primm contributed 10 points and nine assists.

Asheville led most of the way before Liberty (9-10, 4-3 BSC) got close in the final minute. The Flames trimmed a 10-point second-half lead to three at 69-66. Freshman guard Evan Gordon of Liberty was fouled on a three-point attempt with 19 seconds left. He made the first two free throws to cut the lead to 69-68 but missed the third free throw. Liberty got the offensive rebound but a block by Sean Smith prevented the Flames from taking the lead.

Dickey was fouled at the 14-second mark but could only make one free throw to give Asheville a 70-68 lead. When he missed the second free throw, Kyle Ohman of Liberty got the rebound and was fouled.

Ohman had a chance to tie but missed the first free throw. He made the second to cut the lead to 70-69 with 13 seconds remaining. Primm was fouled at 12 seconds left. He made both free throws to push the lead to 72-69.

Williams fouled Ohman at the three-second mark for a two-shot foul. He only made one free throw to cut the lead to 72-70. Smith sealed the victory for Asheville with two free throws at the two-second mark.

The Bulldogs begin a five-game homestand this Monday afternoon when UNC Asheville hosts Bluefield at 2 p.m. The game is being made up after the teams were scheduled to play on Dec. 18 at Justice Center.
