Volleyball Takes Five Set Victory at Radford

UNC Asheville (13-5, 2-0 Big South) has won six of its last seven matches behind Ficker who posted her third double-double of the season and now had 30 kills in two Big South matches. Cindi Miller added 13 kills while Raquel Miotto had 27 digs. Brooke and Bridget Holliday posted 13 and 10 digs respectively.
Radford (9-7, 0-1 Big South) dropped its conference opener despite placing four players in double-figure kills. The Highlanders were led by Lauren Clary who notched 17 kills. Mariah Nussbaum had 12 kills while Laura Waddell and Emily Hayes each had 11 kills in the match.
"I thought our defense played very well tonight," said UNC Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. "We regained the momentum in the fourth set and I knew we were going to win the fifth set."
The Bulldogs had eight five set victories in 2008. Friday night was their second of this season. Asheville hit .343 in the fourth set and .211 in the fifth set while Radford hit .256 in set four and .056 in set five.
Asheville held an 8-4 advantage in blocking and a 76-53 edge in digs. The Bulldogs hit .245 in the match while the Highlanders hit .232.
Bulldog freshman Chelsie Kenley, a native of nearby Christianburg, Va., had eight kills and two blocks in front of family and friends who came to watch her play.
"The energy in the gym was terrific tonight," said Torbett. "Radford's crowd was behind their team and Chelsie's family and friends came out to support her. It really made for an exciting match."
UNC Asheville will have the week off before returning home to face Charleston Southern on Friday, Oct. 2, at the Justice Center. That match will be available live on the Big South Network.
