Volleyball Wins Thriller Over Charleston Southern

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Kelsey Benorden finished the match with two straight kills to give UNC Asheville a thrilling five-set victory over visiting Charleston Southern Friday night in Big South Conference action at Justice Center. The Bulldogs won the back-and-forth match 25-27, 25-23, 25-20, 30-32, 15-13.

Asheville won despite a tremendous match from the Lady Bucs Amanda Hill. Hill finished the match with a career-high 27 kills and 16 digs. Nichole Diller finished with a season-high 18 kills and hit .471 for the match.

The Bulldogs (14-5, 3-0 BSC) enjoyed a great match from senior Lauren Ficker. Ficker had 20 kills and hit .439 for the match. She also recorded her 1,000th career kill and now has 1,005 career kills. Sophomore Cindi Miller had 16 kills, while Benorden had a double-double with 11 kills and 18 digs. The junior outside hitter had not played a match in three weeks due to an injury.

Senior libero Raquel Miotto had a game-high 26 digs. She now has 2,345 career digs and moved into 10th place on the NCAA all-time career list.

CSU setter Sam Sasan had 22 digs and 64 assists. Emily Libertowski finished with 10 kills and also had 22 digs. The Lady Bucs (10-8, 1-2 BSC) had 99 digs in the match.

Asheville setter Rachel Guinane had 55 assists and 11 digs. Bridget Holliday had 14 digs, while her sister Brooke chipped in 13.

CSU battled back from a 22-17 deficit in the fourth set to rally for a 32-30 win to send the game into a fifth and deciding set. Diller had seven kills to lead the comeback. The Bulldogs had match point three different times but each time the visitors battled back with a point to stay alive.

In the fifth set, the Lady Bucs scored the first three points, two from kills by Hill and stormed to an 8-4 lead. The Bulldogs chipped away and tied the set on a kill from Miller at 11-11.


CSU regained the lead on a kill from Hill to make it 12-11. A kill from Benorden and a service ace from Miotto gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the set at 13-12.

Hill registered one more kill to tie the match at 13-13.  But Benorden took over for the next two points. She got her 10th kill of the night to give the Bulldogs the lead for good at 14-13 and her attack down the line give Asheville the thrilling victory.

CSU won the first set 27-25 as the Lady Bucs got two late kills from Cori Holeman to lead 1-0.

The Bulldogs turned the match around in the second set. Trailing 23-21, Ficker picked up three kills and helped Asheville even the match with a 25-23 win.

The home team was in pretty good control of the third set and hit .308 with six kills from Ficker to win 25-20.

The fourth set had the Bulldogs winning most of the way as they led 19-14 and 22-17 before CSU stormed back to force a fifth set.

Asheville plays next at Presbyterian Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Charleston Southern travels to Gardner-Webb for a 2 p.m. on Saturday.
