ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's tennis teams hosted a Fall Tournament last weekend at the Crowne Plaza Tennis Center.

Each team was scheduled to play at East Tennessee last weekend but rain prevented that tournament from being played. The mini-tournament included the men's and women's teams of UNC Asheville, East Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and members of the Asheville tennis community.

"We were able to throw a little tournament together pretty quick," stated Bulldog head coach Lise Gregory. "It was good for both of our teams to play against some good competition that should prepare us for the spring season."

Leslie Smith highlighted the women's performance with three singles' win in the Royal Group.  She did not lose a set in any of her three matches.

Britney Cloer and Stephanie Schon won two matches in the Royal Group. Louise Bottomley split a pair of matches in that flight. Bottomley also won a match in the Blue Group.

In the Blue Group, newcomer Jackie McGuirk won two matches in straight sets. Sarah Brinkley won one match in the Royal Group and two matches in the Blue Group. Chelsea Hall was able to get a split in the two matches she played. Tania Mateva also split two matches that she played.

In doubles action, the duo of Louise Bottomley-Devon Cavanaugh and Leslie Smith-Stephanie Schon split two matches. In the Blue Group, Sarah-Brinkley-Chelsea Hall was able to get a win in two matches.

"All in all we had some good performances throughout the weekend," commented Gregory. "We have more depth than we've had in the past few years, and I think that will show throughout the year."

The women's tennis team will have some time off before participating in the ITA Regional at Wake Forest, Oct. 22-26.
