Women?s Soccer Drops Opener 1-0 at Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C.-UNC Asheville and Appalachian State played a statistically even match but Sydney Hill's tally in the 14th minute gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon in the season opener for the Bulldogs.
Both teams finished the match with three shots on goal, three corner kicks, two goal keeper saves, and six fouls. The only differences in the stats were that ASU (1-1) held a 7-6 advantage in shots and had the one goal.
Hill's goal was assisted by Maggie Graham who sent a pass from the left side across the box to Hill who beat Asheville (0-1) goalkeeper Veronica Lazar for her first goal of the season. Lazar made one save facing five shots in the first half. Freshman Megan Dent played the second half in goal for the Bulldogs also making one save but she only faced two shots.
Carolina Clarke keep a clean sheet for Mountaineers as she recorded two saves after facing six shots. Hill took three of ASU's seven shots in the match. Taylor Dunlap also took three shots and Graham took one shot along with her assist.
McKenna Stockhausen took three shots for UNC Asheville placing two of her efforts on goal. She was saved by Clarke in the ninth minute and again in the 33rd minute. Lauren Turnburke took two shots and Katy Beeler had one shot for the Bulldogs.
Most of the scoring opportunities came in the opening half. After halftime, each team took just two shots. None of the Bulldogs' second half efforts were on goal. Both came during a flurry in the 63 and 64 minutes off the legs of Turnburke and Beeler. Only one Mountaineer shot in the second 45 minutes required a save. That came in the 48th minute.
UNC Asheville will return to the pitch onThursday, Sept. 3, for a 6 p.m. match at Wofford.
