ASHEVILLE,  N.C. ? The UNC Asheville baseball program will have two players in the Class A South Atlantic League this year. Former Bulldog pitcher Alan DeRatt will be pitching for the Asheville Tourists, while former center fielder Kevin Mattison will be patrolling center field for the Greensboro Grasshoppers.

Mattison and DeRatt had successful four-year careers for the Bulldog program. Mattison was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 28th round with the 838th pick of the 2008 Major League Baseball First Year Players Draft last June.

He hit .286 in 2008 with a career-high 11 home runs as a lead off hitter for Asheville as he was named to the Big South All-Conference's second team. Mattison finished his career as school's all-time leader in career triples (23) and runs scored (192). His 23 triples put him in first place on the Big South's all-time career list for three-baggers.

Mattison played for the Jamestown Jammers of the New York Penn League last summer. He helped lead the Jammers to a playoff appearance and a trip to the championship round where they fell to the Batavia Muckdogs.

Mattison finished the year hitting .250 and led Jamestown in stolen bases (14) and triples (6). He had four home runs, 10 doubles and 20 RBI.

DeRatt and Mattison could square off as opponents as soon as Monday night when the Asheville Tourists have their home opener against Greensboro at McCormick Field starting at 7 p.m.
