ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Abram Williams threw eight inning of shutout baseball as Radford defeated UNC Asheville 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

Williams earned his first victory of the season, throwing eight shutout innings, allowing five hits and walking three to improve to 1-2 on the season. Jason Patten threw a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save as Radford improved to 13-11 overall and 7-3 in the Big South.

Ryan Dull (2-6) was the tough luck loser for UNC Asheville (5-26, 3-11 Big South). Dull threw his second straight complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits through nine inning of work.

All of the scoring came in the top of the fifth inning. Radford ?s Ben Toth reached first base on a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Brett Mollenhauer.  Reggie Keen delivered his third hit of the day, a single through the left side and Toth easily scored from second base.  Keen stole second base and moved over to third on a groundout. Alex Gregory drew a walk and stole second base in front of a two-RBI single by Nick Minter.

Asheville had two good scoring chances in the game. In the bottom of the second inning, Derrick Hopkins hit a two-out single down the right field line that advanced Mike Vaughn to third base.  Hopkins stole second base and Danny Baatz loaded the bases after getting walked by Williams.  The inning ended with no Bulldogs crossing home plate as Jordan Lurie grounded to Highlander second basemen Mollenhauer.

Baatz led off the top of the eighth inning with a single up the middle.  Jordan Lurie followed with a single through the left side of the infield.  A sacrifice bunt by Catlin Carter moved Baatz and Lurie to second and third with just one out.  Williams escaped the jam getting Kevin Weidenbacher to strike out and Justin Schumer to ground out.

It was the second time the Bulldogs have been shut out in the last four games and marks the first time Radford has swept UNC Asheville since the 1995 season.

Asheville returns to action on Wednesday night as it hosts Furman in a 7 p.m. at McCormick Field.
