04.15.2009 | Women's Tennis
ROCK HILL, S.C. - UNC Asheville head coach Lise Gregory has been
selected as the 2009 Big South Conference Women's Tennis Coach Coach of
the Year. Gregory was recognized Wednesday
evening at the League's women's tennis awards banquet held at
McBryde Hall on the campus of Winthrop
University.
In her second season as head coach at Asheville, Gregory led her team to the best regular-season finish in the history of UNC Asheville women's tennis. Her Bulldogs posted a school record in wins with an overall record of 12-8, tying Regular-Season Champion Winthrop for the third-best overall record in the Conference. Her team posted a 3-4 League mark as the Bulldogs picked up their first Conference win two seasons to earn the No. 3 seed in this week's Conference Tournament. It was a remarkable turnaround from last season's 6-12 overall record and 0-6 Big South record. Gregory tallied 4 first-place votes and nine points, finishing ahead of Winthrop's Cid Cavalho (two first place votes, four points).
The Bulldogs had two other players honored by the Big South Wednesday evening. Junior Louise Bottomley was named to the Academic All-Conference Team. On the men's side, sophomore Alexander Greer made the Academic All-Conference Team.
In Thursday's opening round of the Big South Championships, the fifth-seeded Asheville women's team will face fourth-seeded Coastal Carolina at 9 a.m. at the Winthrop Memorial Courts. The sixth-seeded men's team will take on #3 Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m.
