Baseball Falls to App State 17-7

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Appalachian State pounded out 18 hits and scored nine runs in the ninth inning to record a 17-7 non-conference win over UNC Asheville Tuesday night at McCormick Field.
The Bulldogs (5-22) were led at the plate by Beau Zinman who went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Kevin Wiedenbacher and Justin Schumer added two hits each.
The Mountaineers (10-15) won for the fourth time in the last five games. They were led by Wes Hobson who went 4-for-6 with two doubles and two RBI. Isaac Harrow and David Towarnicky added three hits each. Chris Alessandria finished the scoring for ASU with a grand-slam homer in the top of the ninth inning.
The Apps broke out to an early 3-0 lead before the Bulldogs rallied with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a run-scoring double from Reed Kreiser. Asheville tallied three runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Schumer's run-scoring single cut the lead to 3-2 before a wild pitch and an error allowed two more runs to score to give the Bulldogs the lead.
But the lead didn't last long as ASU scored five times in the sixth inning to take the lead for good at 8-4. Two errors helped the Mountaineers score three runs before Rand Smith's two-run homer completed the uprising.
Asheville battled back and crept to 8-6 in the seventh. Zinman's two-run single put the Bulldogs back in the game. The home team had the bases loaded and one out before ASU reliever Chris Patterson got Jordan Lurie to ground into an inning-ending double play.
The Apps put the game away in the ninth with nine runs as they sent 12 men to the plate.
The Bulldogs picked up an unearned run in the ninth on a run-scoring single from Lurie.
UNC Asheville hosts mountain rival Western Carolina Wednesday night at McCormick Field starting at 7 p.m.
