Pearson Competes in Northern Athletics Senior/U20 Champs

Pearson Wins 100 and 200 at Coastal Carolina on Saturday

CONWAY, S.C. ? Junior sprinter Natalie Pearson opened the 2009 Outdoor Track and Field season in impressive fashion with first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meters at the Coastal Carolina Invitational on Saturday.

Pearson finished first in the 100 with a time of 12.08. She took first in the 200 with a time of 25.03.

“It was great to see Natalie get off to such a good start to the outdoor season,” commented UNC Asheville coach Jesse Norman. “Overall, it was a solid effort for the first meet. We got some good performances in a lot of different areas. However, there are some areas we need to get better in over the next few weeks.”

Emma Bussard took a third place finish in the 3000-meters Steeplechase race with a time of 12:12. Rachel Ambrosia finished sixth in the same event at a time of 13:30.

In field events, Corrie Trotter finished 11th in the high jump with a leap of 1.45 meters. She also competed in the long jump and best jump was 4.08 meters.

Rebekkah Pineda came in 15th in the hammer throw (33.14), while sister Emily came in 16th (33.09).  The duo also competed in the discus with Emily taking 16th (34.13) and Rebekkah finishing with a throw of 30.99 meters.

Morgan Weeks competed in the javelin (25.11) and shot put (9.22).

In distance events, Erin Putnam ran in the 5000 meters and had a time of 20:08, finishing in 15th place. Mackenzie Wheaton was right behind Putnam with a time of 20:19.

Emily Becker competed in the 3000 meters at a time of 12:36. In the 800 meters, Katie Olert was 19th (2:29) and Michelle Busse finished with a time of 2:37.

On the men's side, Dane Corriher had a good performance in the 200 with a time of 23.03. In the 3000 Steeplechase, Adam Matthews finished seventh with a time of 10:14.

On the distance side, Sam Maynard came in 13th place in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:02. Kent Rankin had a time of 9:27 in the same event.

Simon Haake competed in the javelin and had a throw of 39.80 meters. He also competed in the discus at a time of 34.54 meters.

Keith Scruggs set a personal best in the hammer throw and finished 10th with a toss of 42.86 meters. Daniel Corriher finished 17th in the same event (35.37).

Will Beasley finished eighth in the triple jump (13.02) and competed in the long jump (5.17).
