ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Reid Augst scored 19 points, all in the second half and set a school record for three-point shooting as UNC Asheville downed Charleston Southern 80-71 in Big South Conference action Saturday evening.

In addition, Augst scored his 1,000th career point in the game and became the 24th player in UNC Asheville school history to reach that plateau. He now has 1,008 career points. The senior forward set a school record by going a perfect 5-of-5 from the three-point line.

The Bulldogs (11-13, 7-6 BSC) had four other players in double figures in the victory. Matt Dickey added 15 points and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. John Williams added 14 points, while J.P. Primm contributed 13 points. Sean Smith finished with 10 points.

The Buccaneers (7-15, 2-9 BSC) were led by Jamarco Warren with a game-high 20 points. Tovi Bailey finished with 13 points. Giedrius Knysas had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Kelvin Martin added 10 points.

Augst had seven assists and six rebounds for the game. Eric Stubbs gave Asheville a lift off the bench with nine points and eight rebounds.

“We came out a little flat today but I thought we did a nice job coming back late in the first half and played much better in the second half,” stated UNC Asheville coach Eddie

Biedenbach. “We did a good job building on our lead in the second half but didn't do the job putting the game away.”

Biedenbach was happy for Augst.

“Reid has worked very hard in his career and steadily gotten better each season,” commented Biedenbach. “We needed him to have a good year this season and he's done the job for us. I'm really happy for him to reach 1,000 points and he does it on a night he sets a school record. No one deserves that more than Reid Augst.”

Leading 30-28 at halftime, Augst quickly got the Bulldogs going. He led an 18-5 outburst with 13 points in the opening five minutes of the half to give Asheville a 48-33 lead. Augst hit three treys and scored on two lay-ups to build on the lead.

The Bulldogs eventually got the lead to 17 at the 8:37 mark on a three-point play from Dickey.

The Buccaneers kept battling and sliced the lead to eight at 76-68 on a dunk from Joel Lamb with 1:08 remaining. However, the Bulldogs got two free throws from Dickey and Primm in the final minute to keep CSU at bay.

Charleston Southern controlled much of the first half as the Buccaneers dominated play early. The visitors shut the Bulldogs down on offense and raced to an 18-6 lead behind six early points from Knysas. A trey from Warren at the 12:16 mark gave the Bucs a 12-point lead.

Asheville began to creep back in the game behind the play of Primm. He hit two treys and a lay-up to get the Bulldogs within 20-18.

The home team took the lead on a Smith lay-up at 28-26. He scored another lay-up on the next possessions to give the Bulldogs a 30-26 lead. Warren hit a circus shot in the lane as the first half buzzer sounded to cut the lead to 30-28.

Charleston Southern hurt itself at the free throw line the first half as it went just 3-of-11 for 27 percent.

Asheville shot 50 percent from the three-point line as it went 11-of-22. The Buccaneers struggled from long distance as they went 3-of-14 for 21 percent.
