Women's Tennis Claims 6-1 Victory Over Western Carolina

02.12.2009 | Women's Tennis

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 victory over mountain rival Western Carolina on Thursday afternoon at the Asheville School.

The Bulldogs (4-1) opened up the match with a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches.

In singles, Leslie Smith fell in a thrilling match against WCU's Izabella Glinska. Glinska won the first set, 5-7, but Smith evened the match up with a 6-3 victory in the second set. Glinska claimed the match win by defeating Smith 16-14 in a tiebreak.

Stephanie Schon, Devon Cavanaugh, Nicole Schon, Louise Bottomley and Tania Mateva all were victorious in their singles matches. It is the second straight match that the Bulldogs have claimed five singles victories.

"I'm pleased with the win," said head coach Lise Gregory. "We have a couple players with injuries and the wind on the courts had an impact on the play, but we still played well and came out with the win."

Today's win is the fourth consecutive victory for the Bulldogs. Western Carolina falls to 1-2 on the season with the loss.

UNC Asheville has more than a week off before it plays its conference opener against Charleston Southern on Feb. 21 at the Asheville Racquet Club. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
