GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's tennis team earned
its third straight win on Tuesday afternoon as it defeated North
Carolina A&T 6-1 at the Aggies Tennis Complex.
The Bulldogs (3-1) earned the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. Stephanie Schon and Leslie Smith cruised to an 8-2 victory over the Aggies' (1-3) pairing Shondra Redfern and Azeib Nigatu. In the no. 2 spot, Louise Bottomley and Devon Cavanaugh fell to Nina Henry and Jaymee Jones, 8-6. Nicole Schon and Tess Darling claimed a 8-5 win over Winnie Quick and Danielle McCaskill in the no. 3 doubles match.
UNC Asheville won five of six singles matches. Smith, Stephanie Schon, Nicole Schon, Tania Mateva, and Darling all picked up singles victories.
"We played well in a difficult situation," said head coach Lise Gregory. "It was very windy and the conditions weren't that great, but we dug down and found a way to come out with the win."
The Bulldogs return home for a match-up with mountain rival Western Carolina on Thursday at the Asheville School. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
