Women's Soccer Falls to Liberty 1-0
10.30.2009 | Women's Soccer
The Flames (9-7-1, 6-1-1 BSC) won despite being outplayed for much of the match. The Bulldogs out-shot Liberty 13-5 and had six corner kicks to two for the Flames. LU goalkeeper Ashley Nyholt made seven saves to keep Asheville off the scoreboard.
The loss eliminated the Bulldogs (4-10-1, 1-7-0 BSC) from going to next week's Big South Tournament in Charleston, S.C.
"Today's game was a microcosm of the whole season," stated Asheville coach Michele Cornish. "We controlled play for much of the day against a very good Liberty team but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. We had chances, some great chances but didn't score. At the end of the day, you have to score."
The only goal of the match came on a turnover in the Bulldog end. Owen picked up a loose ball and scored on a breakaway at the 9:51 mark. It was her sixth goal of the season and the shot was Liberty's first of the day. Asheville had fired the first four shots of the match.
McKenna Stockhausen had just missed scoring for Asheville when her shot from five yards out was stopped by Nyholt.
The Flames had a great opportunity late in the half when Jordan Woody made a great run and had a shot from 10 yards out just go high above the net.
In the second half, the Bulldogs dominated the match as they out-shot the visitors, 7-2. Katy Beeler just missed on two shots midway through the half. Sara Marie Holland's header went inches wide of the goal with 10 minutes left. Freshman Chloe McCleary-Small ripped a shot from 10 yards out that went wide to the right.
Both teams finish the regular season on Sunday. Asheville will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday against High Point starting at 2 p.m. Liberty hopes to win the Big South Conference regular-season title on Sunday when it plays at Presbyterian at 2 p.m.
