ROCK HILL, S.C.-Katy Beeler scored her second goal of the year but it was a clearance that deflected off goalkeeper Veronica Lazar for an own goal proved to be the difference as UNC Asheville fell to Winthrop 2-1 Friday night at Eagle Field.

UNC Asheville (4-8-1, 1-5 Big South) opened the scoring the 30th minute as Katy Beeler scored on a rebound off a shot by Hannah Jeske. Beeler took the rebound and sled it past Winthrop keeper Kelsy Weavil for her second goal of the season to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived as Winthrop (4-9-2, 1-4-1 Big South) tied the match just before halftime on Lia Gordon's first collegiate goal. Lazar could not handle a crossing pass and Gordon managed to fight off the diving goalkeeper and a Bulldog defender to score on the open net.

The only tally of the second half came in the 65th minute. when an Asheville defender attempted to clear the ball out of the box but the ball deflected and went into the goal for the go ahead goal. It was the second time this season Winthrop has scored on an opponent's own goal.
