Women's Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision to Coastal Carolina

10.18.2009 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Coastal Carolina scored twice in the second half en route to a 2-0 Big South Conference women's soccer victory over UNC Asheville on a cold and windy Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

The Bulldogs (4-7-1, 1-4-0 BSC) out-shot the Chanticleers 10-5 in the second half but simply could not get the ball in the back of the net.

Coastal Carolina (5-10-2, 3-2-1 BSC) is now unbeaten in its last four matches. Asheville lost for the second straight time.

The Chanticleers got the winning goal midway through the second half. Marissa Terry sent a pass to Dana Gentile. Gentile maneuvered around Bulldog goalkeeper Megan Dent and hit the ball into the back of the net from 10 yards out for a 1-0 CCU lead. It was Gentile's ninth goal of the season and it came at the 65:12 mark.

The Bulldogs had some chances to tie but shots by McKenna Stockhausen and Leilani Halkiotis just went wide.

CCU sealed the win at the 75:54 mark when Anna Tupy connected on a shot from 25 yards out into the top left-hand corner for a 2-0 lead. The ball appeared to be going right to Dent until a gust of wind pushed it higher and into the goal.

In the first half, Coastal Carolina had the wind and controlled play as it out-shot the Bulldogs 8-3. Asheville goalkeeper Veronica Lazar made three saves in the opening half for the home team.

In the second half, the Bulldogs had the win and dominated play. Stockhausen just missed scoring early in the second half as her shot went past CCU goalkeeper Amy Haggard but just went inches wide of the left goal-post.

Haggard earned her 13th career shutout with six saves.

UNC Asheville plays next at Winthrop this Friday night at 6:30 p.m. Coastal Carolina hosts Charleston Southern Friday night at 6 p.m.
