Thompson?s Double-Double Leads Asheville Past Lady Eagles

Bulldog Women Drop BSC Opener at Coastal

CONWAY, S.C.?Lindsey Thompson scored a season-high 16 points while tying her season best with four made three-pointers but Coastal Carolina came away with a 68-55 victory In the Big South opener for both teams.

Coastal Carolina (9-5, 1-0 Big South) dominated the boards in the first half and made more three-throws than UNC Asheville (3-10, 0-1 Big South) attempted as the Chanticleers went 26-for-32 from the foul line.

Sydnei Moss scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds while Kate Janinski scored 15 points to pace the Chants. Amanda Stull had 11 points, going 7-for-7 from the foul line, with 12 rebounds and Kendra Reynolds had 11 points and 10 rebounds as CCU out rebounded Asheville 49-37 in the game.

Ana Baker, playing in her 100th career game had 10 points and five assists for the Bulldogs who drop to 0-5 on the road and 0-6 away from the Justice Center this season.

Although being out-rebounded 22-9 in the first half, Asheville trailed 26-24 with 4:52 remaining in the opening period. Coastal used an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to lead 34-24 with 35 second left in the half. Baker knocked down a pair of jumpers on the Dogs final two possessions including a free-throw line jumper at the buzzer to send Asheville to the locker room down 36-28.

A basket by Linda Aughburns with 17:10 left in the game pulled the Dogs to within 41-32. Aughburns finished with nine points. It was the last time Asheville would pull to within single digits of the lead.

Asheville would score just seven points over the next 12 minutes as the Dogs went 4-for its first-28 from the floor in the second half. Coastal took advantage building its largest lead 56-37 with 5:10 to play.

The Bulldogs finished the game outscoring Coastal 18-12 as Thompson knocked down three three-point shots in the final minutes. For the game, the Dogs shot 32 percent while the Chants shot 39 percent from the floor.

Coastal scored 16 more points from the free throw line shooting 81 percent from the stripe to just 53 percent (10-19) for Asheville.

The UNC Asheville bench outscored the Bulldog starters 30-25 in the game marking the first time this season the bench has outscored the starters.

Asheville will try travel to Charleston Southern on Monday for a 5:30 p.m. against the Buccaneers. The game can be heard live on AM-1310/970 WISE in the Asheville area beginning at 5:15 p.m.

NOTES: Ann Baker played in her 100th career game...Baker's five assists tie her with Mandy Edwards (1994-98) with 332 career assists which is second on Asheville's all-time division I assists list...Lindsey Thompson set a career-high with 16 points, it was the first time this season she has led the Bulldogs in scoring... Asheville out rebounded CCU 28-27 in the second half but the Chants were 18-24 from the foul line in the 2nd half while Asheville was just 6-for-15...Coastal's last basket came with 7:06 left in the game, CCU scored its final 14 points from the foul line...Asheville is averaging 47 points per game and is shooting 28.7 percent from the floor in its five road losses this season.
