NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. ? UNC Asheville picked up its first road win of the season with an impressive 76-65 Big South Conference victory over Charleston Southern Saturday night.
The Bulldogs (6-8, 2-1 BSC) were led by senior forward Reid Augst's game-high 24 points. J.P. Primm finished with 18 points, while John Williams added 12 points. Eric Stubbs enjoyed the first double-double of his career with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
“This is a great win,” commented UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “We really played well from start to finish and beat a good Charleston Southern team on the road.
“I thought our defense was terrific for the most part, and we executed when we had to get the job done,” added Biedenbach. “We struggled from the free throw line for most of the game but with the game on the line, our guys stepped up and hit free throws down the stretch when we had to have them.”
UNC Asheville led from start to finish. The Bulldogs built a 19-point lead midway through the second half as Primm sank a long three-pointer to push the lead to 59-40.
Charleston Southern (5-7, 1-1 BSC) made a run and closed to 65-56 on a Jamarco Warren three-pointer with 2:20 left. But Augst hit a lay-up and Williams scored on a dunk to get the lead back to 69-56. The Bulldogs went 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the victory.
The Bulldogs were 0-7 on the road entering Saturday's game but played great defense throughout the night. CSU shot just 41 percent (26-of-64) from the field and 29 percent (7-of-24) from beyond the arc.
“I was really pleased with our three-point shooting defense,” Biedenbach stated. “Charleston Southern shoots the three-pointer very well but tonight we challenged them and played good defense the entire game.”
Asheville controlled the backboards 42-36 and had only 12 turnovers against CSU's defense. Augst was 8-of-11 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. He also pulled down seven rebounds.
UNC Asheville continues its road trip with a game at Gardner-Webb Wednesday night at 7 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the schools since the 1984-85 season when they were both members of the NAIA District 26.
