Cross County Squads Prepare for 2008 Season

08.14.2008 | Cross Country

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country teams began practice for the 2008 season this week.

Second-year head coach Jesse Norman expects the Bulldogs to be much improved this year with both squads. Each team has a great deal of talent returning and impressive newcomers ready to make an impact.

“We're really excited about the upcoming year,” stated Norman. “I like the way everyone has come back, in shape and ready to work hard. We have a good nucleus for each team returning and the newcomers we've brought in are ready to challenge right away.”

The men's squad will be led by a pair of seniors in Andrew Burnette and Adam Matthews. The duo improved a great deal last season and were the Bulldogs top runners at the end of last season. Matt Holman and Duane Stepp are juniors who will give Asheville some depth, while sophomores Jay Barringer and Bobby Abrahamson should be counted on, as well.

The newcomers are freshmen Dylan Ellison, Jake Latini, Sam Maynard, Kent Rankin and Adam Schnapp. Ellison is a local product from West Henderson HS in Hendersonville.

The women's team was hit hard by graduation as their top three runners graduated. However, juniors' Katie Olert and Emily Becker are ready to have big seasons. Sophomore Katherine Clark got some much-needed experience last year. Six freshmen are on the Bulldog roster in 2008 and all will get a chance to shine right away. They include Aurelia Baca, Emma Bussard, Michelle Busse, Erin Putnam, Allie Shields and Mackenzie Wheaton.

Both UNC Asheville teams open the 2008 season at Western Carolina on Friday, Aug. 29.
