ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Billy Froehlich went 4-for-5 to lead a 15-hit Winthrop attack as the Eagles downed UNC Asheville, 10-1 in Big South Conference action at McCormick Field Saturday evening.
The Bulldogs (22-33, 5-15 BSC) were led at the plate by third baseman Justin Schumer who went 2-for-4.
Winthrop (24-31, 11-9 BSC) got great starting pitching from Ryan Schwartz. The right-hander worked seven innings, allowing one run on five hits, striking out five and walking two. He raised his record to 6-6.
The Eagles scored in every inning during the game but the sixth and eighth innings. Froehlich had two doubles, a single and a triple.
Winthrop opened the scoring in first inning. Tony Brunetti led the game off with a single. He moved to second on a ground-out and came home on Froehlich's RBI-single.
The Eagles added two runs in the second. Eddie Rohan hit his 12th homer of the season to push the Winthrop margin to 2-0. Brunetti had a RBI-double to push the margin to 3-0.
Bryn Henderson drove in a run in the third inning on a ground-out after a double from Froehlich.
In the fourth inning, Kevin Nolan's two-run double padded the Eagle lead to 6-0.
Winthrop pushed across another run in the fifth when Froehlich led off with triple. He came home on a sacrifice fly from Henderson to increase the Winthrop margin to 7-0.
The Eagles got a solo homer from Eddie Tisdale in the seventh inning to give the Eagles an 8-0 lead. A run-scoring double from Henderson made it 9-0.
Asheville finally got on the board in the board in the bottom of the seventh. Reed Kreiser walked to open the inning. Danny Baatz followed with a single to center, moving Kreiser to third. A double-play ball scored Kreiser.
Senior right-fielder Elliott Arrington had a single in the game and that gives him 293 career hits for fourth on the all-time list in the Big South. He is tied for fourth with former Winthrop great Matt Repec.
UNC Asheville finishes up the regular season Sunday afternoon when the Bulldogs host Winthrop Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
