Bulldogs Fall at Upstate 6-4

SPARTANBURG, S.C.-- UNC Asheville had 11 hits but left 11 on base in a 6-4 loss at USC Upstate Tuesday night in Spartanburg.
Asheville (8-11) broke on top with an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning. Schumer reached on a one-out error. Beau Zinman singled and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. A throwing error by the Upstate catcher allowed Schumer to score the game's first run.
Upstate (9-10) answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Guillen led off with a single and was sacrificed to second base. Back-to-back doubles by Rivers and Runion gave the Spartans the lead. Morgan and Tanner had singles to load the bases in front of a two-RBI single by Clark.
Guillen got a seventh inning rally started with another lead off single. Clark followed with a bunt single. They moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a 2 RBI-single by Runion who had three of the six Spartan RBI in the game.
Asheville loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth. Schumer came through with a bases clearing double to make the score 6-4 but Tyler Oliver came on to record the final out.
Schumer (0-2) had allowed just two hits while keeping Upstate scoreless through the first five innings but was saddeled with his first loss of the season. At the plate, Schumer went 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI.
Robert Stegbauer (1-2) picked up the victory throwing six innings allowing just an unearned run on seven hits.
The Bulldogs will return home to begin a three-game series with Hartford at Greenwood Field on Thursday. The game begins at 2 p.m. and can be heard live on uncabulldogs.com.
