ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Chioma Okoli scored 20 points and Lindsey Montgomery added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds as UNC Asheville downed visiting Mars Hill 88-50 in an exhibition women's basketball game at Justice Center Thursday night.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-2 lead after five minutes and coasted to the victory over their Division II neighbors.

UNC Asheville's suffocating defense forced the Lions into 29 turnovers. Mars Hill shot 15.6 percent (5-of-32) in the first half and finished up at 29.7 percent (19-of-64).

“We played pretty well for an exhibition game,” stated UNC Asheville coach Betsy Blose. “There are still plenty of things to work on though but overall we gave a very good effort. We were able to play a lot of different people and work on a few things.”

Freshman Ipek Dericki contributed 12 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs. Ana Baker had seven points, seven assists and five steals.

Mars Hill was led by Bria Smith with 13 points. Erica Warren contributed 10 points. Shamia Terry contributed seven points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals.

The Bulldogs built on their lead in the first half as Mars Hill was ice cold from the field. Asheville pushed the lead to 30-6 at the five-minute mark on a free throw from Okoli. The Lions hit a three-pointer with four seconds to go in the half from Smith only to see Baker hit a half-court shot as the first-half buzzer sounded to give the Bulldogs a 44-15 halftime lead.

Mars Hill had 17 first-half turnovers that resulted in 25 Bulldog points. Asheville controlled the paint with a 30-6 advantage.

The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Lions, 60-42 as Asheville had 24 offensive rebounds. Kiana Rainey had nine rebounds, while freshman Linda Aughburns had eight points and eight rebounds.

UNC Asheville opens the 2008-09 season on Friday, Nov. 14th when the Bulldogs host a two-day tournament. Asheville faces Fairfield at 4:30 p.m. with Morgan State and William & Mary tipping off at 2 p.m. The tournament will conclude the following day with games at Noon and 2 p.m.
