ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Shireyll Moore scored 20 points to lead Fairfield to a 69-49 victory over UNC Asheville in the first round of the UNC Asheville Women's Basketball Tournament at Justice Center Friday night.

 

Fairfield will meet Morgan State at 2 p.m. on Saturday for the championship. UNC Asheville faces William & Mary in the consolation game at Noon. Morgan State roared past William & Mary 70-48 in the first game behind 27 points from guard Corin Adams.

 

The Bulldogs (0-1) were led by Chioma Okoli with 13 points, while Ana Baker added 11 points.

 

The Stags had Baendu Lowenthal contribute 16 points, while Desiree Pina tallied 12 points. The visitors shot 51 percent (28-of-55) from the field and 54 percent (6-of-11) from the three-point line.

 

Fairfield (1-0) opened the game with seven straight points and never trailed. UNC Asheville made several runs at the Stags in the opening half and cut the lead to 24-22 on a jumper from Baker at the five-minute mark.

 

The Stags went on a 12-4 run as they got two treys from Pina to race to a 36-26 lead. However, Baker knocked down a half-court shot as the first half ended to cut the lead to 36-29 at halftime.

 

The Bulldogs were with 41-35 early in the second half only to see Fairfield stretch the lead to 51-37 on a 10-2 run over the next seven minutes. Five different players scored for the Stags in the run.

 

The visitors continued to build on the lead as they won 69-49. The Stags outscored UNC Asheville 33-20 in the second half. The Bulldogs struggled with their shooting on the day as they shot just 33 percent (20-of-60) from the field.

 

In the first game, Morgan State forced 28 William & Mary turnovers and coasted to the win. Adams was spectacular on both offense and defense. She went 10-of-18 from the field and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Adams also had eight steals and six rebounds.

 

Erin Hawkins chipped in 16 points for the Bears. The Tribe (0-1) was led by Tiffany Benson who had a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
