ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Kelsey Benorden had 14 kills and 19 digs as UNC Asheville won its third straight match with a 3-0 Big South Conference volleyball victory over visiting Gardner-Webb Tuesday night at Justice Center. The Bulldogs won the match 25-21, 25-20, 25-21.

UNC Asheville improved its record to 13-11 overall and 5-6 in the Big South Conference. Gardner-Webb fell to 5-22 overall and 3-10 in the BSC.

“We knew this would be a tough match because Gardner-Webb is so good defensively,” commented UNC Asheville coach Julie Torbett. “We got some great play from our outside hitters and got key points when we had to have them. I'm really pleased to get this victory tonight against a well-coached Gardner-Webb squad.”

Gardner-Webb was led by Laura Wilcox with 10 kills. Heidi Steinbrunner added nine kills. Katie Matykowski finished with 13 digs.

Asheville had Cindi Miller with 10 kills. Rachel Olivio had a solid match with eight kills in 15 attempts as she hit .467. Bridget Holliday and Raquel Miotto added 15 digs each.

Each set was close but the home team was able to put together key surges in each set to win each time. In the first set, the match was tied at 18-18 before Benorden had three kills to lead a 7-3 run as the Bulldogs won, 25-21.

In the second set, Asheville led 16-15 but got three kills from Miller and two each from Heather Burns and Benorden to pull out a 25-20 win.

In the final set, Asheville jumped out to a 10-4 lead only to see GWU rally behind Jessica Clayton and Wilcox. The duo helped lead a 10-4 run to knot the game at 14-14. But a kill from Benorden gave Asheville the lead for good at 15-14. Burns led the final charge by getting three kills in the final part of the match as the Bulldogs won the third game, 25-21.

UNC Asheville plays next on Friday night at Justice Center when the Bulldogs welcome Big South Conference leader Liberty for a 7 p.m. match.
