Volleyball Wins Third Straight By Downing Gardner-Webb in Three

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Kelsey Benorden had 14 kills and 19 digs as UNC Asheville won its third straight match with a 3-0 Big South Conference volleyball victory over visiting Gardner-Webb Tuesday night at Justice Center. The Bulldogs won the match 25-21, 25-20, 25-21.
UNC Asheville improved its record to 13-11 overall and 5-6 in the Big South Conference. Gardner-Webb fell to 5-22 overall and 3-10 in the BSC.
“We knew this would be a tough match because Gardner-Webb is so good defensively,” commented UNC Asheville coach Julie Torbett. “We got some great play from our outside hitters and got key points when we had to have them. I'm really pleased to get this victory tonight against a well-coached Gardner-Webb squad.”
Gardner-Webb was led by Laura Wilcox with 10 kills. Heidi Steinbrunner added nine kills. Katie Matykowski finished with 13 digs.
Each set was close but the home team was able to put together key surges in each set to win each time. In the first set, the match was tied at 18-18 before Benorden had three kills to lead a 7-3 run as the Bulldogs won, 25-21.
