Tar Heels Too Much For Bulldogs
11.30.2008 | Men's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? UNC Asheville battled hard, but top-ranked UNC Chapel Hill was too fast and too big for the Bulldogs Sunday night at the Smith Center. The unbeaten Tar Heels won 116-48 before a crowd of 18,054.
UNC Asheville (3-3) was led by Reid Augst, Jason Ridenhour and Matt Dickey, each with 8 points. John Williams finished with six points, nine rebounds and blocked four shots.
UNC Chapel Hill had five players score in double figures. Ty Lawson led the Heels with 22 points and eight assists. Danny Green tallied 18 points, while Deon Thompson finished with 17.
The Bulldogs led early 6-2 as they scored six straight points after a Tar Heel bucket. But UNC Chapel Hill got going and quickly went on an 11-0 run to race to a 15-6 lead. The Bulldogs were never able to regain the lead.
Asheville was ice cold with its shooting in the first half. The Bulldogs shot 24 percent (8-of-33) from the field, 33 percent from the line (3-of-9) and 16 percent (3-of-18) from beyond the arc.
The Tar Heels used their super quick offense to shoot 55 percent (21-of-38) from the field in the opening half.
“We took too many quick shots in the first half” stated UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “We didn't get back on defense and allowed them wide-open looks. You can't give any team, especially a team like North Carolina, wide-open looks.
“Hopefully, this will be a great learning experience for us,” added Biedenbach. “We're better than we showed tonight. North Carolina is a great team but we helped them a little too much.”
In the second half, the Tar Heels unleashed their three-point attack. Danny Green hit five straight treys, including a 35-footer as North Carolina continued to build on its lead. UNC Chapel Hill was 8-of-9 from beyond the arc at one point in the second half.
The Bulldogs shot a season-low 27 percent (18-of-68) from the field and just 17 percent (3-of-18) from the three-point line.
UNC Asheville plays next at SEC power Tennessee Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The game will be televised by SportSouth.
