Volleyball Falls in Five Sets at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C.?Kelsey Benorden had 26 kills and Raquel Miotto had 27 digs but it was not enough as Winthrop defeated UNC Asheville 25-22, 25-27, 25-18, 23-25, 15-11.
The Bulldogs (8-7, 0-2 Big South) dropped its second straight five set match in conference play. Service errors cost the Dogs on Saturday. Asheville committed 13 service errors, six of them in the opening game.
Winthrop (5-10, 2-1 Big South) was led by Kelley Taylor and Kaley Viola who had 24 and 23 kills respectively. Janice Rivera added 26 digs for the Eagles.
Jenna Dover had a career-high 12 kills for Asheville who out-hit Winthrop .267 to .232. Both teams had 79 digs but the Dogs out-blocked the Eagles nine to four. Heather Burns matched her career high with eight block assists. Benorden set a new career high with five block assist.
“This was a disappointing match,” said Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. “We had a chances to win but service errors really hurt us today. I thought Kelsey and Raquel both played very well. I was pleased with our blocking. Jenna and Cindi (Miller) really stepped up for us. We just gave away too many points.”
Asheville returns home on Tuesday night to face new Big South member Presbyterian at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on the Big South Edge.
