Barton Ties School 3-point Record as Bulldogs Run Past Paladins

Women's Basketball Drops Big South Opener 81-70 to High Point

ASHEVILLE, N.C.?Ashton Barton scored a game-high 21 points but UNC Asheville could not overcome 28 turnovers as the Bulldogs dropped their Big South Conference opener to High Point 81-70 on Saturday afternoon.

 

High Point (9-7, 1-0 Big South) had five players score in double figures led by 18 points from Jurica Hargraves who went 12-for-14 from the free throw line. Amber Manuel scored 16 points while Francis Fields had 13 points and five assists. Mackenzie Maier had 12 points and eight rebounds and LaTeisha Fields chipped in 10 points.

 

Stacy Shepard scored the first five points of the game for UNC Asheville (8-8, 0-1 Big South) and finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Barton went 6-for-18 from the floor including three of the Dogs four three-pointers on the afternoon. She also went 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Kendall Shepard tied her career high and Arescia Moore set a new career high as both players finished with 12 points.

 

Asheville led 10-8 at the 16:25 mark when High Point went on 12-2 run to take a 20-12 lead on a lay-up by Jennifer Long at the 13:03 mark. The Dogs went on a run of their own to get the deficit to five at 25-20 with 8:42 left in the half. Hargroves hit a pair of free throws with 1:14 left to send the Panthers into halftime with a 43-35 lead. HPU shot 51.5 percent from the floor in the first half.  

 

In the second half, Asheville would pull to 55-52 at the 10:11 mark but HPU scored on back-to-back possessions to move its lead back to seven points. It was a six point game with 5:19 left, when back-to-back Bulldog turnovers led to four fast break points and HPU was up 69-59 with 4:22 left to play. The Panthers scored 31 points off Bulldog turnovers in the game.

 

The Panthers went 16-for-20 from the free throw line in the second half hitting on their last 11 straight attempts. For the game, HPU went 25-for-32 (78.1 percent) from the foul line while Asheville went 22-for-29 (75.9 percent) from the charity stripe.

 

The Dogs held a 49-32 rebounding advantage and led 31-11 in second chance points but the Panthers held a 48-24 advantage in the paint and a 38-16 advantage off the bench.

 

Asheville will return to the Justice Center next Saturday, Jan. 26, to host Coastal Carolina in a game that has been moved to 1 p.m. and will be televised by Fox SportsSouth. High Point will return home to face Winthrop on Jan. 23.
