Mase Wins Mile at Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Emily Mase won the mile to highlight the UNC Asheville indoor track and field team's performance at the Carolina Invitational on Saturday.

Mase won the mile race with a time of 5:29, easily outdistancing the competition on Saturday. Teammate Emily Bass finished in sixth place with a time of 6:00.

UNC Asheville coach Jesse Norman was glad to get the first meet of 2008 out of the way.

"We were a little rough around the edges on Saturday," stated Norman. "We had some good individual performances but for the most part we'll do better than we did on Saturday. That's what this meet is for is to get the rust out and get back to work."

In the 800 meters, Katie Olert finished 13th (2:31) and Liza Duncan came in 14th (2:32) respectively. Natalie Pearson took 11th in the 60-meters at a time of 7.91.

Emily Elstrom grabbed an 11th place finish (6.26m) in the weight throw. Morgan Weeks finished 14th in the shot put (8.72m).

On the men's side, Matt Holman took a fifth place finish in the mile (4:41), followed by Andrew Burnette came in sixth (4:42). The 3000 meters had Adam Matthews finishing 10th (9:36), while Joel Quirk came in 12th (10:09).

In the 200 meters, Dane Corriher finished 15th (24.15) and Duane Stepp took 20th (25.16). In the 400 meters, Corriher came in 14th place (51.75) and Stepp in 23rd (56.38).

Senior Omar Ahmad finished 12th in the long jump (6.13m). In the weight throw, Daniel Corriher took 8th place (12.62m) and Keith Scruggs finished 9th (11.88,).  In the shot put, Corriher placed 14th (13.12m) and Scruggs 17th (11.95m)

The Bulldogs compete again next weekend (Jan. 18-19) at the Niswonger Invitational at East Tennessee State.
