Men's Soccer Edged by Campbell, 2-1 in Double Overtime

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Josue Soto scored two minutes into the second overtime period as Campbell outlasted UNC Asheville, 2-1 in collegiate men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

The loss was a tough one for the Bulldogs (1-4-0) who dominated most of the match, especially in regulation. Asheville held a 14-5 edge in shots heading to overtime.

However, in overtime Campbell outshot the Bulldogs, 6-2 and began to take control of the match. The winning goal happened at the 102:01 mark when Soto stole an Asheville pass and scored from 10 yards out.

“This is a tough loss as I thought we played good soccer today against an excellent Campbell squad,” admitted UNC Asheville coach Steve Cornish. “We had a lot of chances to score in the second half and didn't quite put the ball into the back of the net. Our lads played hard and we simply need to build on this effort.”

Campbell (4-2-0) opened the scoring early in the match when Richard Jata scored off a deflection on a corner kick. The goal came at the 6:01 mark.

That would be the only shot on goal for the Camels the rest of the half as the Bulldogs forced action. They finally tied the match when Alex Morrow took a pass from Scott Szymanski and buried a shot from 12 yards out at the 37:30 mark. Justin Head also earned an assist on the play.

Each team had chances in the second half but the Bulldogs began to take charge in the final 10 minutes. Asheville fired five shots in the final two minutes and just missed winning the match when Patrick Tate's blast from 25 yards out just whistled wide with five seconds left in regulation.

In the first overtime period, David Verga of Asheville had a header go wide early in the period before Campbell took charge. Khali Johnson had two quick opportunities but was stopped by Bulldog goalkeeper Phillip Horner.

In the second overtime period, Campbell was able to get the ball down in the Asheville end when Soto scored the game0winner at 102:01.

UNC Asheville plays next at home against Presbyterian Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
